Trainer qualifications or background:
Hazel has a background in psychology and counselling. Her particular areas of expertise are in the fields of loss, change and grief as the result of illness and bereavement, palliative education, developmental psychology and special education. Hazel has taught in a variety of roles within the secondary school and tertiary environments. She is currently teaching Behavioral Science to trainee radiation therapists and Human Development and Behaviour to police officers.

Exploring Creative Arts Therapy

Josie works as a Creative Arts Therapist, Counsellor, Facilitator and Trainer and has recently returned home to New Zealand from Australia. She is now offering counsellors/therapists the opportunity to recharge, realise their creative potential and add new techniques to their toolkit in the unique setting of Baylys Beach.

Workshop dates for 2008 are:
30th and 31st August: Introduction to Sandplay Therapy
1st and 2nd November: Visual art mediums & creative writing

Cost per person is $300 which includes 2 nights accommodation (Friday/Saturday) at the beach. Each weekend is limited to 6 participants.

Josie worked as a Counsellor and Facilitator in New Zealand for nine years offering Creative Arts Therapy as part of her practice. In 2006 she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapy followed in 2007 by a Masters Degree both at RMIT University in Melbourne. During this time she also developed and coordinated programs supporting women with advanced cancers across Victoria. In addition Josie worked as a Creative Arts Therapist at the Austin Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit.

Creative Arts Therapy offers a multi modal approach using Visual Arts, Dramatherapy, Music, Creative Writing, Storytelling, Movement and Sandplay. Whilst the weekends have a specific focus they will incorporate a variety of modalities.

Josie has now conducted training programs in Sandplay Therapy in Australia, England and New Zealand for over seven years. Her recent study and experiences add depth and breadth to what she can offer from her base at Baylys Beach, two and a half hours north of Auckland.

Lois Tonkin Grief Counselling & Grief Education

This is the 5th year this very successful training has been taught in New Zealand. In response to requests from all over New Zealand and overseas, Lois is now offering the course by distance learning as well as on-site in Christchurch. Distance learners will engage with Lois on a one-to-one basis, and also work with buddies in their own locality.

The course offers a comprehensive, contemporary theoretical framework and useful practical applications for people whose work involves providing effective grief support to adults dealing with a wide range of losses such as relationship breakdown, death, disability, job loss and illness. It is of interest to professionals such as: counsellors, social workers, clergy, funeral directors, celebrants, community support workers, human resource personnel, nurses and bereavement support staff. The course consists of 4 modules:
A. Providing Effective Support for Grieving Adults (1 day on-site)
B. Running Grief Support Groups for Adults (2 days on-site)
C. Extending Your Skills in Working with Grieving Adults (2 days)
D. Getting Your Hands Wet: Caring for Yourself When You Work With Grieving People (1 day on-site)

Each module can be complete as part of the Certificate Course, or as a one-off workshop. The course is run by Lois Tonkin, a counsellor, supervisor, writer and educator in the field of change, loss and grief for over 18 years. Lois is well known throughout NZ for her warm, accessible and professional teaching style, and her courses are popular for their balance of current theory and helpful practice. She has written a number of books about grief, and runs Port Hills Press, publishing and distributing high quality grief resources in NZ and Australia. For further information contact:
